Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003)
So is it a full on feminist action flick or just the director’s wet dream? Either or it’s amazing. Quentin Tarantino’s swan-song to some of his favourite genres follows the tale of the Bride (Uma Thurman) taking revenge on the group of assassins who made a failed attempt on her life on the day of her wedding.
It’s a bright, colourful hodgepodge of samurai movies, manga and spaghetti western. Stylish to the extreme and with a powerful performance from the lead actress who runs the entire gauntlet of emotions and is one hell of a force to be reckoned with. The rest of the ladies in support are perfect and fully deserving of their cult following. Tarantino makes a great little story of backstabbing assassins that is fully rounded and pure pulp. It’s a director just having fun making movies and lucky for us it’s a very enjoyable watch. He never hides the fact that he is winking to his audience and it’s all done with a wicked tongue-in-cheek style.
It’s the director at his very best even though at times it feels like he is stealing from practically every film he’s ever seen. Brilliant.
EXTRAS:
The Making of Kill Bill:
A good making of documentary that covers a lot of topics but would have benefitted from being longer seeing it’s the only main feature on the disc.
The 5,6,7,8’s Perform:
The funky female group that Tarantino made stars of perform a couple of songs that appear in the film.
Teaser Trailer:
This is more of a teaser of the entire series. There is a scene of a black guy swinging a sword around that isn’t in either film so it’s a shame that we don’t get any deleted scenes on the disc.
Bootleg Trailer
Kill Bill Vol. 2 Teaser
A rather disappointing disc for one hell of a movie. An instant cult classic that has cemented Tarantino's reputation as a pop icon genius.
