Machete (2010)

So as you probably already know, this film is the follow up to the fake trailer that Robert Rodriguez made for him and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse. Extending the story to include a number of oddball characters, political corruption, Mexican rights and OTT violence the film, as you may expect, is a mess. Yet it’s still good fun.

Danny Trejo gets a rare leading role as the cave-man like Machete, all grizzled features and with revenge on his mind. Working in some way on his side is a terrible Jessica Alba as a border police officer, a smoking hot Michelle Rodriguez as a vigilante maiden and a joint-smoking priest in the form of Cheech Marin. Whilst the villains contain a gloriously snivelling Jeff Fahey, a disappointingly dull Robert De Niro, and tongue-in-cheek roles for Steven Seagal and Don Johnson. Added in the mix is Lindsay Lohan who spends the time either half naked, drugged up and spewing her guts or in a nun’s outfit. So it’s quite an eclectic cast with some having fun and some giving terrible performances.

The story is ludicrous, action is very OTT and the comedy is broad, childish and laid on very thick. Some people just won’t get this film and probably rightfully think it’s a load of garbage. Those who are up for some daft fun should open up a bottle of tequila and drink along with Machete and his path of mayhem. A load of nonsense, but it’s not trying to be anything more than just that.

Some very good deleted scenes here that show some subplots and characters that were cut from the film (Rose McGowan and Jessica Alba as a twin sister)

Audience Reaction Track:

If you would like to watch the film with people laughing and cheering along then here you go. A commentary would have been much more appealing.
